Abdulmutallab faces life in prison for Flight 253 plot - Detroit Free Press

The Federal Defender Office declined to comment.

"The attempted murder of 289 innocent people merits the most serious charge available, and that's what we have charged in this indictment," U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade of Detroit said Wednesday.

Friday's arraignment is to be conducted by Magistrate Judge Mark Randon. The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds.

The indictment says the 23-year-old Nigerian national tried to kill 279 passengers -- including himself -- and 11 crew members with a weapon of mass destruction on Dec. 25.

"The bomb was designed to allow defendant Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to detonate it at a time of his choosing, and thereby cause an explosion aboard Flight 253," the 7-page indictment said.

The document made no mention of terrorism, but the most serious of the six charges he faces -- attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction -- falls squarely under federal terrorism statutes.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. Had anyone died in the bomb plot, the charge could have brought the death penalty.

The other five counts carry maximum penalties ranging from 20-30 years in prison. Two of the counts -- possession of a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence -- can add 30-year mandatory consecutive sentences to the weapon of mass destruction count. If convicted, Abdulmutallab could face a life sentence, plus 90 years.

Abdulmutallab was subdued by passengers on the plane after they noticed his pant leg and the side of the plane's cabin were in flames. No passengers or crew were injured in the attack, which resulted in increased airline security worldwide.

When he was arrested, authorities said the bomb consisted of PETN, or pentaerythritol tetranitrate, a colorless, crystalline material that is highly explosive and in the same chemical family as nitroglycerin.

Wednesday's indictment also revealed that the device contained triacetone triperoxide, another high explosive known as TATP. It's one of the most sensitive explosives known and has recently appeared as a popular weapon in the Middle East. It can be easily prepared using commercially available materials, according to a government Web site.

Catalog reaches back to seeds of company - Omaha World-Herald

January is National Mailorder Gardening Month, and the mailboxes of gardeners will soon be stuffed with tomatoes and melons, peas and perennials. Although most of these catalogs are photographic wonders, few will have the graceful and historic beauty of the catalog the D. Landreth Seed Co. has produced to celebrate 225 years of teaching people how to garden.

"Starting in the 1840s, the Landreths educated Americans about gardening — and about more than gardening," owner Barbara Melera said. "With this catalog, we've come full circle. There is a real need to educate a new generation about gardening"

While researching, Melera learned that everybody who was anybody in American seed trade spent a year's apprenticeship at Landreth, beginning in the 1790s and including members of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Every president from George Washington to Franklin D. Roosevelt had been a customer.

In the 1840s, David Landreth Jr. realized that Americans moving west would need more than a list of seeds to purchase. So his catalog became a kind of almanac/newspaper/gardening manual, and included such information as the names and salaries of elected officials, capital cities, the countries on the continent and scientific discoveries.

The 2010 catalog, which took more than a year to assemble, is the result of seven years of study by Melera of the company archives.

That research includes old photos, seed lists and even a "sports story" printed in a local paper about the outfielder who lost a ball in a field of Landreth onions and fired home one of the onions instead. The umpire never knew the difference as he called the runner out.

The catalog also includes a list of heirloom seeds available today for food grown by slaves, including varieties that were brought to this country from Africa or the Caribbean.

The 70-page catalog, which features the cover of the 1884 centennial edition, is available online at landrethseeds.com or by calling 800-654-2407. Production costs have escalated so that this is the last year the catalog will be free, Melera said.

Great Outdoors Almanac - Green Bay Press-Gazette

INLAND WATERS: Most lake ice is 8 to 14 inches

All but the largest, deepest lakes (think Big Green) are locked in, though there are occasional thin spots near springs along shorelines or in heavy current areas on flowages and rivers. Many lakes are sporting 8 to 14 inches of ice. Check locally for updates.

Some fishing clubs expect to have bridges across cracks on the west shore of Lake Winnebago this weekend. Once roads are marked in the Oshkosh area, the Otter Street Fishing Club will provide updates at (920) 233-6101.

A rich forage base of shad, emerald shiners and trout perch is feeding a booming walleye population on Winnebago, so catches have been spotty. However, some anglers are doing well in 12 to 18 feet of water, with occasional perch caught. Bluegills, perch and an occasional pike are being caught from the bays and upriver lakes.

  • The 2010 sturgeon spearing season on Lake Winnebago and the upriver lakes begins Feb. 13. Last year's biggest fish was an 80.8-inch, 168.8-pound female landed by Amy VanBeek of Menasha. It was the fourth largest recorded in the history of the spear fishery and the largest speared by a woman. The trophy had 62½ pounds of eggs in it.

GREAT LAKES: Bite's been good at Voyageur Park

There's a smorgasbord of fishing opportunities available. Best bets in recent days include off Voyageur Park in De Pere on the Fox River, Oconto Breakwater Park and Oconto Park II, the Menominee and Peshtigo rivers, Dyckesville area and Little Sturgeon Bay.

Ice conditions range from a few inches to nearly a foot in some spots. Most anglers are playing it safe by walking out or taking snowmobiles or ATVs on protected bays, harbors and nearshore areas. Check locally for the latest updates, including spots to steer clear of.

Jigs and jigging spoons tipped with shiner pieces or wax worms are working for perch, walleyes and whitefish. Tip-ups with golden shiners are attracting a few pike, and trout are taking spawn, shiners or wax worms suspended along current edges or in deep holes.

Real Time Trading Reports:  Included are detailed trading reports designed to help investors realize opportunities in these companies.  The reports are linked to the stock symbols in the article below.

     Performance - Click Here

(La Jolla, CA)  Although legendary investor Mohamed El-Erian, co-CEO of PIMCO, expects stock markets to fall by more than 10% this year due to economic weakness, the performance of shipping ETFs, stocks and indicators, as a group, show otherwise.  Due to the falling dollar, American goods and services are cheaper for foreign buyers.  As a result, Vietnam, China, Taiwan and others have increased purchases of American products.  The Claymore Delta Global Shipping ETF (NYSE: SEA) closed January 6th at $14.05, up from its 2009 low of $7.47, due to this increased demand for tankers and other vessels to haul these goods.

Stocks of individual shipping companies have performed well, too.  Oil tankers shares have increased along with the price of petroleum.  United States Oil, (NYSE: USO), the main oil ETF, almost doubled from its March low of $22.74, hitting $41.92 before settling its last trade of January 6 at $41.05.  Share prices for oil tanker companies have risen along with this.  Frontier Shipping (NYSE:FRO), the world's largest operator of supertankers, ended January 6 trading at $30.54 after bottoming at $15.78 in early March 2009.

Also pushing in favor of an up year for the stock markets is the "Early Warning" of the first five days of January.  According to the "Stock Trader's Almanac 2010," 31 of the last 36 times when stocks were positive the first five trading days of January, the S&P 500 rose.  The  SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSE: SPY), which tracks the S&P 500, is up the first three days of trading this year, as is the Diamond Trusts (NYSE: DIA), which tracks the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Speculators, government-induced liquidity and other factors not related to core economic conditions have undoubtedly influenced these ETF and stock prices, leading to El-Erian's concerns.  The carry trade, for example, has driven the price of the dollar lower as it is sold to buy currencies backed by higher interest rates.  This increases the price of oil as investors/speculators then seek to buy commodities as an alternative to a dollar plunging in value.  When the price of oil rises, ETFs for crude, petroleum companies, and tanker shares, among others, inevitably surge from the actions of speculators.   All these contribute to the major indices rising, too.  This is not so with shipping indicators such as the Baltic Dry Index, however.

"Totally devoid of speculative content," is how economist Howard Simon describes the Baltic Dry Index.  "People don't book freighters unless they have cargo to move," he furthered.  On December 5, 2008, the Baltic Dry Index hit 663, its lowest level since 1986.  The highest level was reached on May 20, 2008 at 11,793.  It is now trading over 3000, up from 1316 on February 4 of 2009.   For those looking for solid signs of an economic recovery, many can now be found floating offshore.
